Gordon mentioned in GUITARIST magazine Nov 07

Tristan Seume's column in this month's Guitarist magazine is about a technique that all Giltrap "anoraks" will be familiar with - harping.

Tristan explains the technique, which he learned from Gordon and there is a page of notation and tab of a tune inspired by "Nursery Chimes" The track is also on the included cd - so you can hear how it should sound when the technique is correctly applied.

Curiously, the article includes a picture of Gordon from the 1970's !

BOOK MENTION FOR GORDON

Gordon writes:

It was whilst filming my Guitar Maestro's DVD that mention of Mark Radcliffe's superb book NORTHERN SKY came up in the interview with Trevor Dann. I had a vague knowledge of this book but beyond that, not a lot. The basic story is of a guy returning to his home town in the North and re-establishing relationships with an early girlfriend and musician friends and their involvement in a local folk club. In the filmed interview Trevor quoted from page 19 of the book:

'Not just any old Fylde, Edwardo. A Fylde Gordon Giltrap Signature spruce top with ebony fingerboard and Florentine cutaway, that's all.' I couldn't take my eyes off it. Gorgeous, Mo. Gorgeous. How much?' Two thousand notes,' Mo said proudly.

Needless to say, it was good to get a name check in such a cracking good book as this, and one I can heartily recommend to anyone who has a love for their local folk club, and indeed the British Folk club scene at large, here in the UK. It's a great read I promise you, with many references to the late Nick Drake, and John Martyn as well as many heroes who have graced most of the folk club stages throughout the years.

Northern Sky (2005)
A novel by Mark Radcliffe

A warm and funny novel about folk musicians, by one of Britain's most popular radio broadcasters. Having been sacked from his university teaching job, Ed has returned to his home town to pick up the threads of his old life with his friends and ex-girlfriend, Jeannie, in the Northern Sky folk music club. His dream is to play with them again, making music like his hero Nick Drake - and maybe even a little money. But know-it-all Matt O'Malley is now running the club and has ambitious plans for them that involve contracts and record deals. Can Ed get in on the act, or does O'Malley have a hidden agenda involving the less talented but more photogenic Lane Fox? And can Ed win Jeannie back - or will his legendary temper prevent him from getting anything right? This is a funny and touching novel, written with real Northern soul by one of the country's most popular and knowledgeable commentators on music. It will appeal to anyone who loves music, anyone who's ever been young and ambitious, and anyone who's ever fallen out with someone over the one thing that unites them.
