GORDON GILTRAP EXCLUSIVE

Gordon has written a piece just for us Airwaves members. It will appear on the great website www.giltrap.co.uk in a few days, but you will read it here first:

Here's the exclusive...

I'm delighted to say that I have just completed my pieces for the proposed Giltrap Wakeman album, and I'm delighted with them.

What I have done is to send Rick a selection for him chose whatever takes his fancy. I really don't want to give too much away at this time except to say that some of the pieces have been developing over a long period and one piece in particular goes back to 1973. I can remember writing that piece in Roger Bucknall's flat in St Helens all those years ago.

The pieces were recorded here at home and then mastered by the wonderful Mr Paul White at his studio in Malvern. For some reason the Wakeman wanted the pieces by the 19th of this month (today as I type this is the 19th) for him to make a start on. In the meantime he will be sending me his tracks for moi to work on. This will certainly be a challenge for me, and is in all honesty a strange feeling, it's almost like being a 2007 member of Yes, walking in Steve Howe's shoes. I feel pretty honoured and hope I can do justice to whatever the great Rick decides to send.

It seems as though it's all systems go on the recording front, because apart from the above mentioned tracks, I'm two thirds of the way through recording material for ANOTHER album, this time under the banner of Cool Acoustics for Loughborough University on the new Polymer guitar. The album will contain all of my personal romantic pieces like Down the River and Secret Valentine, in fact the latter is going to be the albums title and it will be released on Voiceprint once completed. It will also be a dual function CD ROM containing footage of me talking about the project and probably playing one or two pieces to camera!

Ray Burley's book of my pieces that mirror the material on his forthcoming album for  Hypertension 'The Long Road Home' is now complete and with the printers as we speak. This will be out on Lathkill publications. More info on the CD and the book as they happen.

Be well all.

Gordon.

Thanks Gordon and thanks too to Sue Holton as she has added new photos from the Smarden Concert to the Gallery Section of the website. Go straight there: https://www.giltrap.co.uk/index.php?page=imgallery&category=01--Smarden_2nd_June_2007

Visit the website news section https://www.giltrap.co.uk/index.php?page=news for other recent GG news including Gordons mentions of re-learning old pieces and the good feeling to know that his past two concerts there contributed to the fund raising for the amazing new Village Hall at Smarden

great new village Hall Smarden has these days, and it gave me a good feeling to know that my past two concerts there contributed to the fund raising for this amazing new building. Well done Graham and all at Smarden for doing such a great fund raising job and making this dream come true for the village.

He also tells us:

The TROUBADOUR book is now complete and will be at the printers in the next few days.

ACOUSTIC mag will be doing an interview with me about the book to coincide with my new TROUBADOUR column for them starting in the next issue.

By the way I had to laugh at the description that Guitar Buyer gave me as a Billy Connolly lookalike! Oh well, there goes my early Al Pacino image...grin.

Deep Purple's Ritchie Blackmore has always stated that he admires Gordons playing and on his website he names Gordon as one of his favourite acoustic guitarists.

Gordon has always been both surprised and extremely flattered by this, and was delighted to spot the following in a magazine:

Gordon tells us: "This is from the March issue of Classic Rock Magazine 2006 in an interview with Peter Makowski. It's a 9 page interview and this appears on page 42 of the magazine.

Question:...

Is there anyone in the business that you would like to perform with, or write music with?

Ritchie:

The people that I look up to, I'd be terrified of. So I'm back to square one. I suppose I have a high standard, or a different standard, where I don't like too many people in the business from a musical point of view.

I look up to someone like John Williams or Gordon Giltrap from a guitar point of view. But I'd feel very ill at ease in their company.

Gordon says, I still can't believe this, but it's true and it's there in black and white"

Dont forget that you can read and contribute to the discussion groups for the great GG at https://www.giltrap.co.uk/discussion/

A final word from the man himself, Well, must be off, have LOADS of practise to do for the new album. Hilary and I hope to see you at the next GG event.
