Sutton Coldfield - 7 / 11 / 2014

Postby keithmeredith » Tue Nov 11, 2014 8:14 pm

The evening of Friday 7th November found the Smiling One and I inexorably drawn to the Duke Street church in The Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield. We were to witness a performance by a certain virtuoso guitarist of our acquaintance – and by so doing we were able to assist his continuing, unpretentious support for the work of the St.Giles Hospice.

The Church Centre is a modern building – its auditorium lending itself equally to spiritual services – here practiced in the evangelical mode - or musical entertainment. This was our second visit, and we were welcomed at the door by the ever-supportive Hilary.

After a brief address by Linda Bridges of St.Giles Hospice - in which she outlined how Gordon became involved with the charities’ efforts to provide specialist care for victims of cancer and their families - Gordon took his place before an audience that included many friends.

Stories and reminiscences from Gordon’s long and successful career in the entertainment industry were interspersed amongst tunes ancient and modern from the extensive Giltrap inventory. The audience rewarded both Gordon’s self-deprecating manner and his gifted prestidigitation of wood and wire with warmth and appreciation.

(They liked his stories and playing.)

Intermingled amid tunes such as: Shining Morn, Appalachian Dreaming, Anyone Can Fly, Five Dollar Guitar, A Dublin Day, Mrs. Singer’s Waltz, and On Camber Sands were very welcome outings for the less regularly presented: A Christmas Carol, Tailor Bird, Loren – dedicated to Bert Jansch’s wife - and Gordon’s version of Davy Graham’s Angie.

Of course no concert by the Troubadour would be complete without the exciting crescendos of The Dodo’s Dream and Heartsong.

On the drive home, I reflected on the variety of Gordon Giltrap’s musical output – from the prog rock era of Visionary and Fear of the Dark – to the gentle reflective pieces from Ravens & Lullabies. Our musical hero is blessed to be dedicating his life to that which he loves – his music - which brings joy and happiness into the lives of those that hear it and are moved by it.

Dear Keith.

I'm always but always impressed by your eloquent, articulate and descriptive reviews of my concerts my friend, and this one is up there with the best of them.

I was very grateful that you made no mention of my trapped nerve at the rear of my left shoulder that was causing me much pain and discomfort during the day and into the evening.Your invaluable help at the end of the concert really made a lot of difference. Your a true friend and valued supporter of my music and concerts. What anyone reading this won't know is the effort you and Fiona made to attend this show and travel the distance that you did with the cloud of bereavement hanging over both of your heads. It meant a lot to me that you were both there in spite of the sadness in your lives right now.

For me the concert was special because of all the good friends like yourselves who make the effort to see me in concert whenever and wherever they may be no matter what the format be it solo, duo or band .

One special friend who has been battling serious health problems for quite sometime was there on the night, and it gave me great pleasure to play and dedicate one of his favourite pieces of mine A Christmas Carol. When the last notes died away I really felt as though I had made a connection emotionally with this dear friend of mine.Hopefully the music and the dedication for a short while lightened his burden, I sincerely hope so.

Thanks again to both of you for attending and writing that lovely heartfelt review.

Be well both.

G&H.
